There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is illegal. Eight gambling halls are established in a generally tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is real of most borders.
The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel compound that features numerous conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
